Brian Cohen 1998 Brazilian Rosewood 650mm scale
Brian began making guitars in 1972 and describes himself as the UK's longest established classical guitar builder. Over his long career Brian has built up an international following of concert and discerning amateur players, including such names as Julian Bream amongst others. His guitars follow the Hauser 1/Torres design and are built using Spanish methods. The result is a light and very responsive instrument with excellent tonal qualities combined with good volume and projection. Typically his guitars retail for in excess of £8k and there is the inevitable waiting list.
The guitar has a Spruce top and book-matched Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. As with Brian's guitars generally, the decoration is restrained and elegant but showing the highest level of craftsmanship. As expected of a slightly older guitar there is some evidence of play wear, but overall the guitar is in very good condition. Brian favours open pore French Polishing as this is closest to releasing the natural tone of the woods used. The guitar has lovely mature, warm and rounded trebles, as would be expected of well aged Spruce, supported by a strong bass. The guitar is beautifully built as one would expect from a luthier who at the time was over 20 years into his career. This is a guitar for the connoisseur.
